USA Volleyball Launches Referee Training Site with First Referee Training Video
USA Volleyball and its Officials Division have launched the first USAV-sanctioned referee training web site with the release of the only comprehensive training video of its kind.

First Referee Basics, a 23-minute video available on line here, is the first of many such training modules and covers such topics as attire, necessary equipment, pre-match briefings, basic first referee mechanics and the three elements of making a call. The USAV-approved videos feature narration by Tom Blue, USAV vice president for international referees, and are professionally produced to address the most recent rules, techniques and interpretations.
The company will soon release Second Referee Basics. A module on USA Volleyball signals is also in production and we plan to produce short (10-20 minute) modules on other topics, including:
Sanctions
The Libero
Ball handling
Dealing w/participants
Pre-match conversations
In-match referee teamwork
Line judging

Rating and Training Events
12/9 Moravian College will be the site for recertifying Regional Referees.

12/16 Renegades will be the site for evaluating candidates who would like to become a Regional Referee.  Attendance must be approved by the Referee Chair.

1/6 Renegades will be the site for recertifying Provisional Referees.

2/3 Renegades will be the site of our 2008 JN Training program.  Attendance must be approved by the Referee Chair.

2/17 Millersville University will be a site for certifying and training new Provisional Referees.  There will be a mini clinic in the morning.  This is only for new referees.

3/8 United Sports Training Center in Thorndale, PA will be a site for certifying and training new Provisional Referees. There will be a mini clinic in the morning.  This is only for new referees.

For all rating events, please contact the Ref Chair to be scheduled. Let us know if you prefer AM or PM.  You will be rated as R1, R2, and scorekeeping.  To be considered for upgrading from Provisional to Regional, please contact the Ref Chair.

Additional ratings may be provided as needed across the region for recertifying referees.  Please contact the Ref Chair to make arrangements.

Raters will also be assigned to work at a few large, multi-day events in January to also provide ratings for those unable to attend the specified rating session and to work with training junior club work teams.

Process:
All rating events will provide for a minimum of one rating each for R1, R2 and Score. JN Training will require two ratings at each position plus a scorekeeper rating. New Regional and New Provisional may require two ratings at the discretion of the Head Rater for that event plus a scorekeeper rating.

Regional to JN:  Those interested in moving to Junior National within two years must attend the JN Training event.  They must be a Regional Scorekeeper and should have attended a national OTP clinic.  Test scores for candidates should be at least 90 before correcting to 100%.  A history of the level of events worked will also be required and taken into consideration.  Experience with Juniors (Boys and Girls) is expected; Adults, collegiate, NIRSA, AAU Nationals, and Referee Advanced Camps are a plus.

JN Referees interested in going for their Natl should concentrate on a few things first: You need to have attended a National clinic (JO's or PAVO/OTP); you need to have worked Boy's JO's at least once and worked Girl's Invitational or JO's once; you need a list of adult competition such as MACS, Men's club, NIRSA, College Club, NCAA Women's DI experience highlighting championship matches; and you need to be a Regional Scorekeeper who is ready to go for your Natl scorekeeping patch. It is suggested that you go for both but it is not required. Once approved, working NIRSA, Pop Idell, or Nittany will be good experience in preparation for Nationals.
